HORSE TALES
Where Adventures Begin
At it’s finest, Rider and Horse are joined not by tack, but by trust. Each is totally reliant upon the other. Each is the selfless guardian of the other’s very well-being...
Growing up with horses gave me a natural confidence and understanding of equine behavior. Working with equine cognition and positive training methods I have developed a great passion and understanding of these gregarious prey animals. Creating a foundation in the horse-human relationship is the first step in training. Dominance or punishment based training methods don't work since horses have an opinion about what they are being asked to do. Working with innate characteristics I can solve problem issues from the ground up. I teach confidence in both the human and horse to create a relationship of trust. All of the “crazy” horses have had poor training or were forced into a job they can’t handle. Possibilities are endless..... Working with the Wild Horse Rescue Center in Mims, Florida, I have developed gentling techniques specific to wild horses. The Center is a Bureau of Land Management safe holding center for reassigned cases. Working with these magnificent, resilient mustangs has been the most rewarding experience of my equine career. Through this work I have used a variety of available training methods modified to reconnect with extreme fear cases. Essentially we are desensitizing these mustangs, who perceive humans as predators, to accept us and our leadership. I am listed with the BLM as a Wild Horse Trainer. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to observe wild horses in the Spring Creek Basin herd management area, Disappointment Valley, Colorado. TJ Holmes is a dedicated volunteer with the Colorado Chapter of the National Mustang Association. TJ tracks and documents the herd of wild horses in the Spring Creek Management area. Observing these horses allows us to understand the natural behavior of family bands and appreciate their social interactions. These horses are a symbol of the Old West America and the people dedicated to protecting them insure their natural free-roaming existence. Dixie is the lovely mustang mare from Nevada that I wrote about in my book. Through the grace of God she is living out the rest of her life with me. See her in her first days. We are living happily-ever-after. http://youtu.be/3wfcfk_wu1g

This book captures the essence of the extraordinary life of Velma Johnston, "Wild Horse Annie," and what she was able to accomplish for the American Mustang. All of us who love and admire mustangs and horses in general owe this courageous woman a great debt of gratitude for exposing the plight and possible extinction of this breed. She was the difference in helping make the world a better place for these animals that are part of our western heritage.”—
